About

Carl and Daniela Schlettwein-Gsell established the Foundation in 1994 to provide an institutional basis for Carl Schlettwein’s longstanding efforts in a private capacity and in the context of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien.

Runs the Basler Afrika Bibliographien

The Foundation oversees the Basler Afrika Bibliographien and its globally one-of-a-kind holdings on Namibia, originally established by Carl Schlettwein in 1971 based on his private collecting. The Foundation also supports scholarly research on Africa, both in the field and at the University of Basel. In terms of content, it focuses mainly on Namibia and southern Africa.

The Carl Schlettwein Foundation is recognised as a non-profit foundation by the Canton of Basel-City and is a member of proFonds, the governing body of non-profit foundations in Switzerland.
