MABU Casing Soils specializes in eco-friendly mushroom casing soil made from sugarcane pith, a byproduct of SAPPI’s bagasse paper-making process in KwaDukuza, KZN. This 100% natural substrate, patented in South Africa and several other countries, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional peat casing. Since 2002, MABU has developed this innovative solution and, following successful trials and industry support, began processing at its own facility near Bapsfontein, Gauteng, in August 2014. Additionally, MABU has expanded into the horticultural sector, creating growth mediums from sugarcane pith, in response to the shift away from peat in environmentally-conscious cultivation. Linda Meyer, the CEO, participated in the program 2017.
